stripped threads in valve cover for torx bolts

Post by fixer333 »

When I removed the upper plastic timing belt cover and the plastic cover for the plugs all of the holes for the torx were stripped out/ threads came out. The guy I bought it from said he had just had the plugs changed. I don't know when they were stripped, but the metal looked fresh.
I need to heli coil or time sert them. I have done hell coils , but I want to know if anyone has used time serts before and how they worked out. Thanks Rob.

Could you get away with using slightly longer screws - ones that would reach into the un-stripped portion of the threads, yet not so long that they bottom out in the holes? They don't have to be very tight, just snug. Apparently the last guy didn't get that message.

Haha yeh ,I can just see the guy running them in with an air ratchet.... he supposedly worked for AAMCO.
I have not removed the coil packs or plugs yet...afraid... everything this guy touched he destroyed. He changed the oil also and there was no washer , just teflon tape and it was leaking. The holes are too damaged to salvage so I guess I will order the time sert kit and some extra inserts. Thanks , Rob
