I have removed the tailgate panel (yes the one that breaks the upper mounts) and have removed most of the tuck tape and extremely gooey black tape to get the panel off for repair. What I noticed is the upper trim that runs up and around the upper 3/4 of the rear window is also loose and flapping (more on one side than the other). I can find no sign of any clips or other form of attachment. Am I missing something or is it just help in place at the bottom edge by the lower trim panel?
Appreciate any wisdom on this please.
Thanks,
Neil.

Anyone?
I reckon it will take longer to remove the tape residue (particularly on the rear window heater wires on the glass) than to repair the door panel. Just need to know if the upper section has any way of being held in place on the lower edges other than by the lower panel when it fits over it.
Thanks,
Neil.

I just went through this on my '96. The upper panel is clipped at the top, but the two 'legs' that come down are held in place by the main lower panel. I put in some foam tape to tighten that fit so that nothing in the tailgate rattled.

Great idea about the tape. I have loads so will follow the good advice! Thanks for the help and confirming what I'd hoped was not another broken piece of trim.
Thanks,
Neil.

My interior tailgate panel is currently residing in the attic. Despite my repeated attempts to fasten it in place and silence its many rattles and squeeks, it continues to prevail. Frustrating that.....not sure how to proceed.

Neil,
A friend of mine had a Skoda that had a similar problem - the upper trim panels just slid into a ledge at the top of the tailgate and sort of clicked into the bottom one. After taking it apart, double sided (kind of thick) tape helped him to put it all back together without the whole thing rattling al the time... Hope it works out for you as well!

I got a repair kit from IPD. It included new clips (I ordered a set of clips for the upper panel separately), as well as reinforcement pieces for the upper clips on the lower tailgate panel. I also used foam weatherstripping style 'tape' anywhere I felt plastic would contact the tailgate. No more squeaks and rattles from my tailgate now.

I got the Pro-parts repair kit from FCP Euro. It repairs the top mounting brackets that break using a metal repair sleeve and supplies new mounting pieces/clips for the 4 upper and lower mounting points. This link to IPD website shows the how to:
Robert also has a good guide for this which adds a bit more detail which is really good.
I'll look at the foam as suggested also.
Thanks guys.
Neil.

98 V70 here: mine had a total of four small black plastic clips across the top and the bottom of the legs tuck under the bottom section.
I removed it to tint the rear window and it's been in my storage room ever since. With the back window tinted you can't see that it's missing and I got tired of fooling with it. All the clips are broken off my carpeted bottom section and the trim piece for the interior lock handle is broken.
I was thinking about a way to either remove the carpet or cover over it with some other thin but wipe-able fabric as the carpet is very dirty and impractical. But all my other lower trim panels near the door are broken or cracked, and since I am contemplating one day removing the headliner again to install a CB antenna - I just said the heck with all of it! One day when or if my ship rolls in I will pull out the headliner, install the antenna, and scour the junkyards for all new interior rear trim, button it up and call it done. But for now it's just very very low on the priority list. I would assume a combination of foam weatherstripping, double sided tape or carefully applied small beads of mastic would all work together to hold the upper hatch interior panel on - but I won't be worrying about that for a looong time! If just the little black triangle clips on yours are broken you may be able to score some serviceable replacements at the junk yard, but if the parts of the u-shaped trim panel where the black clips attach OR the receiving ends on the tailgate itself are messed up you will probably have to go with plan B, I.e glues, tape or mastic. Good luck!
