Blew a valve - Before I sell S70 for parts

Post by hamhead »

My son was driving '98 S70 up Afton mountain on way to school and it jolted. Respected Volvo mechanic says there is no compression on #2 and its the valve and it'd be $3,700 to fix. Says if it was him he would bail on the car altogether. Is a shame as I'd just done a lot of personal work on it. New seat covers, heater box, oxygen sensor, plug wires and more.

I imagine you guys would tell me the same but just want to be sure before I wave bye bye to it.

It's a car killer, there are and more of these burnt valves these days. However, $3,700 is waaaaaaay too high for that job, that sounds like a dealership price.

You can DIY it for about $800 to do it well, or I suspect you could find a mechanic to do it for much closer to $2k.

If everything else is fine, fix it. What car would you get in the 2-3k price range? A geo metro or a beatup civic?

Thanks for the info. I'm through with this one. How does one sell a car for parts? I guess there's a place on this site for doing such?

Blown valve in my '98 S70 a few years ago cost me about $1200 to fix...one new valve...the rest of them re-lapped and new valve stem seals. Been driving great ever since. So, I agree. The quoted price is waayyyyy too high! Find a local indy or if you feel confident do it yourself. It was still a toss-up to get rid of the car or not. While things are apart, do the PCV if it needs it!

Sounds like you are done, unfortunately. However, Volvobylnb.com in Lynchburg is a huge facility that does probably a valve job a week on 5 cylinder Volvos, lots of experience. Much closer to 1500 bucks and they do great work. They will give you a loaner as well.

The word respected is doubtful here. was he talking about a whole engine replacement with a used one? even then it's way expensive

Wow!!! I would have done this job for $1000 with my pleasure. For $3,700 I can rebuild the whole engine, including cost of spare parts, dismantling and installing. But I'm too far, unfortunately.
If my English is bad, please correct me

- erikv11 said if you DIY, it is $800. I did not know it cost that much, I thought if you DIY, the cost is less than $800.
Basically:
* Cost for one or 2 valves in that cylinder.
* You relap the valves yourself. Add new valve seals (20 of them). Anaerobic seal for valve cover, shop supplies etc.
For those who DIY, what is your cost?

O.P....junk yard usually pays around $400-$500 for a car like this.
