2000 V70 NA Air filter box question?

Post by scot850 »

I would have done a search, but as I don't know what the name of it is, here goes. On my 2000 V70 NA/base, you have the normal non-turbo air-filter box which the x2 air intake pipes. The cold air intake pipe from behind the grille, and the clad start/warm air pipe from the top of the exhaust manifold heat shield. No I know there is a thermostatic 'flap' in there that should adjust as the car warms up from a cold start. It is that valve I don't know the name of.

I have pulled the whole air-box, as, as with all the rest of the car it is dirty on the intake side of the filter. I always pull the air box periodically to clean the crap out of it, and especially when buying a 'new' car as few people ever do clean them.

What I want to know, is how do you know if the thermostatic valve is working correctly? I know a lot of people say to get rid of it, but up here where it gets very cold in the winter it is good to have for the car and us!

I don't mind doing a search for it in the old threads, but need to know what it is called to look!

Did I say the PITA'R' threw another hissy fit today? Just got the coil packs replaced (with my stash of good used ones) and a the brakes flushed at the dealer. Ran to the dealer today to get some parts for the project and the ABS /brake warning lights came on and the mileage/trip meters both went to '-----'. Looks like an ABS type issue (module). The module was re-built about 5 years ago and the car has only done about 8000 miles at most since then (module was NOT done by Matty Moo). After cursing the car and the manufacturer at the dealer, on the way home no more lights??!!?

Now that is warm outside, if the flap is fully opened - lets in both warm air from the exhaust + air from the front grid, it means the valve has failed. If it was already replaced, you should see the flap fully closed over the hot air intake from the exhaust manifold.

In winter, I'd rather block it half open like this

I'll try to take some pictures as the link has a P2 air box which is different. My car is a P80 2000 V70 NA/base. It has 2 flaps, one for cold air and one for hot air. What I don't understand is how does this work and what determines what position (clearly temp.) the flaps should be and at what temperatures. The cold flap is nearly 100% open and the hot air looks like 50% (?) perhaps.

Ideally what I would like to know is what are the operating parameters for the 2 flaps?

Pictures to come.....!

So took some pictures of the air-box flaps, so appreciate is anyone can confirm if these are in a normal position for the ambient temp in my garage (today at approx. 15C/60F):
Cold air intake flap on air-box
Cold air intake flap on air-box
Hot air flap from exhaust heat shield
Hot air flap from exhaust heat shield
Cold on left and hot on right
Cold on left and hot on right
Picture above is taken from internally within the air-box looking at the back of both flaps.

Thanks,

Neil.

I was at the scrap yard this morning and there was a 2000 S70 NA there so I yanked out the air box to have a look at it. The flaps looked more or less like your photos. Temp was upper 60s at the time.

Perfect and many thanks! I was also at PnP this morning and there was a matching 2000 V70 NA and someone had already disconnected the air box so I took a look at it as well and it looked the same too. So I guess they are either all wrong/bad or all good, but maybe I can find out some method as to how they work and what the temp markers are.

Appreciate your help.

This is exactly what I removed out of my brother's 98 V70 yesterday. It, like mine, was stuck on the hot side and choking the life out of our engines! I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the thermostat piece so I just left it there. I suspect that a bad thermostat sometimes makes a weird "spring-like" popping sound from the front, driver's side of the engine... I suppose I can cap off the vacuum line that operates the spring, no?

Have you tried to remove the insert that holds the flap? If it is similar to mine, there are 2 x detent flaps inside the air-box lower section. One on the top and one underneath. Depression those should allow the whole flap portion to slide out (I'm sure with a lot of persuasion!!). That may then allow you to remove the thermostat. I don't see it listed as a separate part, but like any thermostat I'm sure they have a life span.
