Did a brake job on my 2004 XC90 and while I was there decided to inspect the emergency brake shoes. That meant releasing the connector on the tunnel (drivers side) to release the brake shoes.
Whomever designed that thing is obviously brilliant, however Volvo made the mistake of letting this person write the instructions on releasing this connector.
Anyway while fiddling around with the connector I somehow ended up pulling back the carpet (think I might have dropped a tool) and noticed that the foam underneath the carpet was all wet. Wet wet.
Decided the pull the carpet and it turned out there was a lot of water there.
Then I remembered I had to fix the drain hoses from the sun roof over the winter. Those had come out of the roof pillar near the dashboard because of failed straps. Those had been leaking for a while. Anyway after the fix I proceeded to dry out the carpet from above never considering the possibility of water getting underneath the carpet on the floor. Because it looked like there was a thick plastic layer between carpet and foam.
Apparently not.
The right hand side was much worse as far as free water was concerned. But here is the thing. If you park somewhere with the nose up all that water makes it way back to the rear foot wells.
Therefore there is a moist environment underneath your carpets and this may explain why there are electronic gremlins on some of these vehicles (the yaw sensor is one with reported corrosion).
