ipd oe upper radiator hose premature failure
For the last few weeks i've been losing coolant, and today I finally found the source of the leak the thermostat end of the upper radiator hose was spraying steam out the hose sidewall reinforcement webbing, even after tightening then replacing the hose clamp both clamps being norma aba hose clamps. But it seems like a premature failure to me, and I got it at ipd so I should think it's not counterfeit and should be oe and it's marked volvo oe but How long has everyone else's oe hoses lasted because currently this one only has about 2 1/2 years and less than 10,000 miles on it, and it's one of the few hoses that actually doesn't have any oil or anything else on it that I would think would cause premature failure.

I have hoses on the cars that are years old with many 1000's on miles on them. Typically I only replace the upper one when replacing a radiator.
It may have joined the short lifespan of many other rubber components in the world where less real rubber in now used in manufacture of parts. There was the recent concern on the short lifespan of upper spring seats from our friend rspi. I read several classic UK car magazines and this is becoming a common thread with older cars and parts unfortunately, but this s very worrying. Out of interest what anti-freeze do you use in your coolant system? Volvo or aftermarket?
Neil.

Mine are all original.
Just make sure that you use 50/50 antifreeze & water mix.

If it failed near the clamp it probably was an installation failure.
If it failed away from the clamp, its a premature failure - whats the warranty with IPD? Call them, (not email, text nor web browser) and ask for an adjustment and promise you will send the part back.

re: scot850 I have only used oem volvo blue coolant mixed 50/50 with fresh distilled deionized water, changed every other year so i dont think it's the coolants fault.
re:avscate
It failed at the end of the hose and I inspected the area where the hose clamp was and I didn't see any cuts or damage, It seems like the hose had some kind of internal failure that caused the coolant to get in between the layers of rubber and into the reinforcement webbing. I haven't taken it off yet, but I will be taking off tomorrow or the next day to replace it, and I will try to get photos as well I think i will give gates hose a try and how their quality is.

I forgot to add I did call ipd and they said that they only have a one year warranty and they couldn't do anything, and didn't know of any recalls or bad batches or anything else. I also called a volvo dealer and they didn't know anything about hoses failing either unfortunately.

Volvo never hears of problems with their cars even when you send them multiple pictures of different vehicles with the same issue. IPD have unfortunately gone that way too. I no longer buy their products or stuff from them. One my V70R I am slowly removing their parts. Some love them, I used to but now they are too expensive for Volvo parts and shipping also.
Volvo customer service used to be great about 20 years ago, now they have gone the way of many others and are crap.
Buy your parts from FCP Euro as they have lifetime warranty on any parts they sell you even if we install ourselves.
Neil.

Marked "Volvo oe"? I have yet to see a Volvo part installed by my dealer marked oe. Here are photos of my upper and lower hose installed by my dealer and are genuine Volvo parts. Should be marked Volvo followed by a part number and on mine Poland. June

re:june yes as far as i know looking at first two pics.
Ok I just went by O'Reilly's got a new gates hose to replace the old oem hose and I'll include some pics of the hoses, when i took off the old hose it was leaking form both ends and had discolored reinforcement webbing if you look at the last few pics there's coolant residue on the radiator inlet and on hose. But I would say that the gates looks good enough for now and it fits much tighter than the oe hose did and feels like it has more reinforcement as well, so i think it was good to replace now before it split in half and i think will stick to fcp euro next time thanks.

Those look like mine so I doubt they are counterfeit. This is disturbing! My factory hoses went 13 years and nearly 140K and it was the heater hose that blew. The upper and lower hoses were replaced with the radiator for good measure due to age. I sure hope I get more than 2 years service from the hoses...
