Small Transmission Service Project
So, after getting the car running properly it has now been obvious that there are some transmission issues. Symptoms are hard downshifting when transmission is up to temperature. Usual cure is to clean the three transmission solenoids which is exactly what I'm going to do. Stay tuned for pictures.

Where do you find out about cleaning the solenoids? Anyway, it looks like you know what you're doing! Good luck and I hope it fixes your problems.

Cleaning the solenoids is well documented and can really help. The Transgo shift kits available for these include 2 drill bits so you can ream out the solenoid bushes.
I'm having a heat related downshift issue on our 2.5T 2006 XC90 and will consider this if another fluid drop doesn't help. I think the smashing into gear thing is more of a solenoid problem than hard down/up shifts.
Kallekula let us all know how this goes. I had a hard up shift on 1st to 2nd gear and also a hard downshift from 3rd to 2nd on my 2001 T5 until I bypassed the internal filter by drilling the case and smashing out the filter. Obviously the filter was lowering fluid pressure. Drives like a dream now.

Drilling the case and smashing the filter?! Wow, do you have any pictures of that?precopster wrote: ↑28 Oct 2017, 14:56 Cleaning the solenoids is well documented and can really help. The Transgo shift kits available for these include 2 drill bits so you can ream out the solenoid bushes.

I use a Magefine filter now.
I'm gonna do the solenoids some time this coming week. Will definitely get back with the result.

Great to hear you'll get back to me. I often hear of imperfect results with the solenoid repairs especially on high mileage cars when it comes to hard shifts. My T5's filter was actually totally blocked and no gears were available however a symptom I remember when it was running was the false neutral into first gear when stopped. It no longer does this either.

Monday night means solenoid cleaning time!
All solenoids reading 6 Ohm Starting with the SLS solenoid Rolling it open Internal components Using a reamer to clean out the bushings Dirt from reaming Closing time The SLU internals look a bit different. This one was by far the dirtiest of the three. All three done Gonna try and find some time this week to install the solenoids. Stay tuned for the result.

Clean valve body cover
Solenoids fitted
Dirty old transmission fluid. Actually it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. More brown/red than black.
New fluid
Drain plug had caught some debris
Clean
