BRAKE FAILURE - DRIVE SLOWLY A.S.A.P / ABS Service

BRAKE FAILURE - DRIVE SLOWLY A.S.A.P

Volvo 2001 V70 2.4T wagon

I have had my front and back brakes changed but I continue to have the ABS Service Light come on and intermittently the BRAKE FAILURE - DRIVE SLOWLY A.S.A.P message comes on and it deactivates the TRIP odometer. It shows all -------- then it clears itself and the mileage returns as if nothing had happened. I brought my car to a very good dealer that charged me $285 and a diagnostic that it could be the ABS module. They wanted to know if I would agree to change it for $1200. for the part plus 4 hrs. labour. Most of the time the car runs well - this message may be seen when starting the car or if I hit a bump or it may go on when the car is stationary - iding at a light ... Any idea of what might be the cause - is the dealership right on the need to change the whole ABS module?

Thanks

Thank You to all of you that have replied and Matthew for a professional site. ... What I am surprised by most is that Volvo hasn't performed a Quality Assurance on this part and had a recall. The history of failures on it should very easily send out a "RED FLAG" to Volvo. As a second car I have an old 1995 Buick Regal that has as many sensors etc and I will honestly say I haven't had any experience with sensors. I am aware that people have their views on American Cars but in one year I have had more sensor problems and visits to the dealership on my Volvo then I have had over the life of my Buick. An expesnive module of this nature should not fail so early and what I find interesting is how there are so many different prices and labour estimates for removal / installation for the same Volvo part. I think I will forward a letter to Volvo - maybe we all should to show our displeasure with their Customer Service.

PS: I have read much on Vic Rocha and if it turns out to be the ABS module - I may pursue this avenue.

Don't let the 1998 date in the post that Matthew showed you fool you. From my understanding the modules fail up to and including year 2001. Yours is no different, and yes, what's going on with your car sounds like a typical ABS failure. Eventually the light will stay on all of the time and the odo will quit working.

It takes about 20-30 minutes to remove and put back on. The dealership is trying to rip you off. By the way, the dealership wanted $766 to replace mine. I sent mine to Vic Rocha. Cost $160 total.
