2000 V70 Base - Safety Inspection

Well took the V70 base for its pre-sale inspection and although it has not run in the last 3 months not expecting anything much if anything at all.

Was staggered to find their estimate of nearly $2700 of repairs!!

When I checked the items was staggered to find the following:

1) LH ball joint loose? - Was totally fine when suspension was checked out and car driven 1000km since repairs completed 6 months ago! Will re-check to confirm, but have several excellent spare Volvo ones.
2) R (inner and outer tie rods) - Supposedly fixed previously in the last 2 years. Clearly was not done.
3) Both L and R spring seats - Again struts were removed and checked and were fine. Looking again there is clear separation. Bugger.
4) Power steering pipe from header tank to pump leaking - Not convinced on this as pipe had a leak due to bad hose clamp. Need to re-look and confirm
5) LH axle seal leaking - What the heck, just had an new seal and good used axle and had dome 0km since!
6) Highlighted the timing belt has no history, but I know it is due next year. Have a Hepu pump, Volvo tensioner and idler bearings but no belt that are to go with the car.

Otherwise it was fine! Oh, bugger. Have to get the darn thing back up and axle stands and get to work yet again on it.

Had the discussion before, but just to confirm, Sachs Spring seats are the go to other than the Volvo (now their XC90 version).

Strangely, when I went onto FCP website, They don't show the Sachs option under my 00 V70 as an option. All they offer is a kit with CRP? spring seats (anyone know what/who they are?).

Strange FCP wouldn't show the Sachs seats under the '00 V70... it might just be a glitch on their catalog. AFAIK (and I could be wrong), the front spring seats (at least on FWD) are all the same on the P80.
CRP is Continental Rubber Products. Those should be good quality. I've always been happy with CRP/Continental/Rein parts.

Sachs is still probably the best option, although if the CRP seats are significantly cheaper, I might opt for those as long as they aren't junk. I would double check part numbers in VADIS and order from FCP accordingly.

Thanks for the help it is much appreciated. FCP does show it if you put in the part number and lists it for my car, so must be a glitch.

I think I may replace the power steering hose, although I am not convinced it is bad yet. I did several drain/fills and it was leaking at the pump end due to a bad hose clamp. I have dried it off, but as I have to place an order anyway, I'll buy the Rien hose for $12 or so as an insurance in case it does sweat or weep.

May have to also replace the axle inner 'O' ring seal as it is also weeping. I replaced it but the axle jumped out, so assume it must have been nicked in the process.

Again the CRP spring seat does not show up in my cars section, but putting the part number in it comes in at about the same as the Sachs part. The CRP is $25, Sachs $32 and Volvo $45. Hate skimping on parts, but this car has to go, so will go with Sachs (These are fitted to my 'R' which has not gone far in the last 5 years, but they are still ok).

I wouldn't hesitate with Sachs parts. ZF brand parts like Sachs and Lemforder tend to be the best.

Thanks, that is what is on order now the Sachs ones. Also bought the TRW steering tie-rod kit. It was way cheaper buying the kit in relation to buying the individual parts. That way the 2nd set can go into my stash should the 'R' need any in the future. Also found a RH outer tie rod in my stash of spares I had forgotten about!\

I'll also go to Volvo today and pick up a new axle seal. The newer axles use an 'o' ring type, and thinking it might have got nicked when the axle jumped out after replacement. As I will be removing the struts and LH control arm anyway, hopefully not too much work if axle decides to release.
