Hello, my wifes trusty 02 wagon has developed a problem with the remote and the key.
We have only one key and she has already been stranded once locked out of the car. The remote will not lock or unlock the car, so you cant park it anywhere for very long because it's not secure.
replacing all of that at the dealer could be very expensive.
I was wondering if I could remove a set of locks, keys, remotes, ignition etc. from a 02 xc70 that is being parted out and replace the ones in her car. Is that feasible, and if so is it a major PITA?
key / fob / remote swap from one car to another?

- Been there done that.
- Option 1: new key is about $180 ($75 for key, $30 for "software license" and $70 programming fees). This is day light robbery but it is what it is.
- Option 2: use the key manually, ignore the fob. This is what I have been doing for a long time.

Agree with above posters...can't transplant and most likely (best) option is to use key in door.
Two other things to check:
1) Confirm you've changed out the key fob battery and installed it correctly.
2) Open up the key fob (should be one phillips head screw). Split the casing apart and remove the rubber boot underneath. Double check that the solder attachment points on the circuit board for both the lock and unlock buttons are not broken. I've found that after years of pressing, these can break and cause your issue. If broken, how good are you with a soldering gun?
Good luck. I can't live without my key fob.

Find doublebug (Henry) on the board. See if he can reprogram / pair a new remote for you - you will need an OBD2 cable..

Thanks for the great replies. I may not have stated what I wanted to do correctly.
My wifes 02 XC70 has a problem with the locks. The key does not work in the door and the remotes dont work.
If I could locate a junk car - with functioning keys, locks, ignition and remotes - could I transplant those parts into my wife's car?

Question: When you press the key fob lock or unlock button, do you hear a clicking in the driver door? If so, it may be the grommet (plastic) holding the rod that unlocks/locks the door is busted (ie. the rod is disconnected). It could also be your door lock mechanism has gone bad...that can be transplanted from a donor car. Make sure you get the same PN (S60 and S80 mechanisms could have the same PN). It may also be electrical (not key fob related), like a fuse or relay or door lock mechanism unplugged.
With the new info, I'd focus on the door lock mechanism. Not too hard to change if you have a little mechanical skill...I've transplanted a few from the junkyard. As I recall, a new one from Volvo is > $100, junkyard, probably < $20.
Good luck.
