Lining Up Front CV Replacement Joint On Propshaft

Post by wanderdüne »

Hi, I am about to replace the front CV joint on my 2003 XC90 T6. I have the propshaft removed from the vehicle and removed the fuse for the Haldex and that has eliminated a ticking type noise that was audible when the XC was cold. Assuming it is the front CV, as it is all dried up and is quite stiff. I have purchased a replacement CV joint kit.

I am asking if anyone knows of a DIY or knows of a technique or method that I can use to make sure the 6 screw holes of the joint where it connects to the angle gear output flange are in the proper alignment relative to the (in my case, "U") joint at the rear of the propshaft. I do have the basic method to replace the joint, but am wondering how I can assure that everything lines up for the re-installation. Just want to make sure that I have it right; especially as I did not remove the exhaust and do not plan to remove it when I re- install the propshaft.

Thanks

If I understand your question - you want to know how to make sure the male splines on the Prop shaft properly mesh with the female splines on the new CV once the original CV is removed and the new one is installed.

Good question as the splines do not seem to have a directional restriction.

I suggest you mark with a Sharpie, pen, nail polish or by scoring both the original CV and the Prop Shaft a line that will help you align. Then once the original CV is removed from the Prop Shaft match the splines on the new CV with the old CV and transfer the mark to the new CV. Then dry fit to make sure it fits, that is alignment marks line up and then the bolts holes line up as required. If all is aligned complete final fitment.

Please update, with pictures if you could, how the process went.
