P0455 - Will CEL go off?

Post by Shamiks V70 »

We found what we believe the problem that was causing the CEL to come on and code showing P0455 on Saturday and made the correction on our 1998 V70. Will the light turn off by itself or do we have to turn it off? I need to run this through the emissions testing soon and this seems to take forever to reset to ready. Thanks in advance.

If I remember the software right it takes 46 cycles without an error to reset an emissions CEL - this can take a long time, as in months.

it will be much faster to either reset with a code reader, or disconnect the battery for 10 minutes.

You will have to drive it for about a week to have the monitors 'go ready' for inspection - if they arent ready you fail automatically, even if there are no codes.

You'll have to clear the codes and let the car go through its drive cycle before it'll pass inspection. Otherwise, like abscate said, the monitors will not all be ready.

Don't know about your state/county, but in my county, my '98 S70 GLT has always passed inspection (via the old tailpipe smog test), even though it has **never** -- in 2 years of ownership -- had all OBDII Readiness monitors be READY at the same time. The previous owner, in another state, had the same problem, and he also followed the below procedure to pass his inspection.

1. Be sure the gas cap is on tight.

2. Always reset DTCs or disconnect battery immediately before driving the 3-4 miles to the emissions testing station. Sometimes I even do the DTC reset while in a nearby parking lot. This is necessary to ensure that no OBDII Pending DTC is lurking hidden, ready to set the CEL while the car is idling before or during testing.

3. Mention to the emissions testing personnel that they'll have to do the tailpipe test.

I don't think the tailpipe test is an option for us.

If you are in Maryland you can have 1 or maybe even 2 monitors not ready. They will still test and you will pass. 1998 volvos are recognized as having a difficult, lengthy & tedious drive cycle to have all monitors ready. Check your motor vehicle administration web site for emissions testing exceptions

I had thought that VA was safety inspection only (it has been ~20 years) so if you have the option to "live" there then do so.
