Hey everyone..MDK here. I have a 1998 XC70 ... early VIN ... that I am unwilling to depart with. I had a VW mechanic scan it and He say it has an evap leak ...a big one. He cleared the code but said it would return. I know about the gas cap but where else should I look ? Any input would be great... thanks again MVF

Check the pipes around the carbon canister which on your car I think is under the LH front fender behind the headlight.

This is most likely the dreaded P0455 code. It is much discussed elsewhere in this forum if you do a bit of search. My 98 V70 suffers from this affliction, but now that I have received the Georgia Senior emissions exemption, I haven't put much effort into finding the source. This past month while replacing my rear brakes I stumbled on the likely cause by accident. One of the hoses connecting the rollover valve had a big hole in it. This is one of the more common causes and is worth checking along with the carbon canister.

Smoke test, blow smoke in the lines and see where it leaks out.

A big leak in context of the evap system is a hole bigger than 1 mm, so a single split in a hose will do it.

I wish I had a " smoker"
Google "DIY evap smoke machine", there are many ways to make one ... cheap.
You could puff on a Cigar and then blow.

Its harder than most of those videos make out. Burning oil with battery heating is a pretty easy way to start a fire. I found using a compressor, sage smudge sticks, clay pot - all stuff I had lying around, but all in would probably run $150-200

Personally, I'd carefully inspect the usual suspects that are enumerated in this forum. I'd only buy some cheap cigars and monkey with the smoke treatment if inspection offers no satisfaction.

I think about 90% of P0455 are cured with the J hose and canister shutoff hose replacement.
