2007 s80 v8 crank seal

Post by goldmandan »

To replace the front crank seal. I see in the shop manual that they want you to use all these special holding and press tools
are these very necessary? I looked at the instructions and it seemed straight forward, remove the wheel/fold inner fender, get to crank bolt, remove with air tool, use puller to remove balancer. then use extractor to remove the seal. install using seal installer
put harmonic balancer on, install bolt to whatever torq spec, then back off 360 degrees and then retighten to 2nd torq spec. Does factory tools need to be used? I don't want the balancer to go flying off.....

I think you are on the right path. I don't know the V8, but most of the time you can work around the special tools. A seal is a seal, just make sure you buy a quality replacement and don't let the lip seal fold over or get damaged while installing.

My advice is look at the shop manual instructions and see what the special tools are doing. Many of them just make the process super easy and fast. Seal press tools are very helpful but not necessary in my experience. They keep the depth and alignment true, but most DIYers do without.
