No transmission filter? Dealer said so

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

No transmission filter? Dealer said so

Post by StupidS80 »

I ordered a trans filter on ebay for my 04 S80T So while speaking to the local dealer about an Etm which he said is dealer only and cant use after market bs. Out of curiosity I asked for a trans filter price. He says mine does not have a filter just a magnetic pan. Uhm what about dust and non metal stuff? Now I've searched many parts sites and they all show the same filter I ordered, so why does mine not have one or is the parts guy an idiot?

You have the 2.5L which is mated to a Aisin Warner AW50-50/51. The AW50-50/51 cannot be serviced without disassembly. The picture shows the location of the ATF filter. The bolt next to the large gear is what holds the filter in place.

Thank you. Well that's very interesting, just when you think you can just go to a walmart for a fluid & filter change Volvo throws a wrench in it. Guess I'll just pump and dump til the fluid is clean and btw the dealer was wrong

The transmission is not a Volvo transmission.
Nothing in the service schedule about changing the filter.
They are good transmissions, with laser cut gears and advances in fluid technology, I can see a filter lasting the lifespan of a transmission. Make sure you use a JWS 3309 transmission fluid.

My first Volvo so I had no clue about the filter, is it the GM trans?. I read about the 3309 fluid but the parts stores in my area don't carry it but i did pick up a few qts of Valvoline Import full synthetic. On the label it lists Volvo #97340, 97341 & 1161521 will it be ok to use?

Only the 6 cylinder 2.9 and T6 models are lucky enough to have the GM transmission which does have a replaceable filter. The AW transmission is a Japanese transmission that I understand has no filter, only a internal screen not serviceable.

Oh you must never add fluid other than the exact specific fluid or you risk killing the transmission no Dextron III in case you got a 6 cylinder owners manual. The 5 and 6cylinder owners manual are different publications for S80. The GM Hydromatic uses Dextron III easily found, but many post Toyota sells the correct Japanese spec fluid cheaply. June

No it is not the GM transmission. Aisin Warner is the name of the manufacture of the transmission mated to the 2.5L.

I cannot locate enough information to determine if the Valvoline Import full synthetic is OK.

The Volvo part number for the ATF is 1161540.
Correct Aisin-Warner ATF
Valvoline MaxLife is JWS 3309 compliant.
Mobil One ATF 3309 is JWS 3309 compliant.
The T-IV (ATF-0T4) fluids are JWS 3309 compliant.

Here are pictures of the dipstick location for GM and I marked where the AW dipstick would be. You can't mix the two locations up. June
