1996 850 NA Wagon P0455 Large Evap Leak

Post by PeteB »

I've seen lots of threads about this and we are now getting this single code.

One curious thing, the car leaked gas when full last year and I fixed the cracked hose
but why didn't we get the code then?

Anyway is there a checklist somewhere on how to diagnose this problem, we tried
the grease on the gas cap test and it still has the issue?

You can (1) spend a couple hours of replacing the J hose, the L hose, and looking at the rest for leaks, or a (2) couple of hours building a smoke tester and find the leak and just replace the bad part.

I think on that car the canister is under the driver fender, so have a look at the hoses there first if you choose (1)

Check canister J hoses first, jack the car on stands and trace the line from the Canister to the rollover valve near the rear passenger wheel- Gross evap leak means it’s really big and you won’t miss it. If it ain’t on the canister or the rollover valve, it may be some headache near your fuel pump- that’s when it gets ‘fun’

This. A smoke tester would be a great tool here, but it would probably be a good idea to just go ahead and replace all of the hoses as old as they are.
Fortunately I got rid of mine by replacing the L- and J-hoses.

This tutorial is for the S70 is it even close or is there a diagram of where
to locate the hoses?

For my car, that's how it's set up. However it may be different on yours, Volvo used a few different setups for the charcoal canister. I'm pretty sure your canister should be up front behind the bumper cover, I believe on the driver side. Inspect any of the hoses coming off of it, if that's the case.

I found a loose hose when working on the alternator that I must have
knocked off when changing the radiator. All is well now!

Code is back, checked the obvious hoses and didn't find anything. Guess we are off to
change the J and L hoses.

Yeah, remember if you use your car on the highway it can take months to get the evap cycle to complete and ensure evap codes are cleared

He does a lot of around town driving.
Does it take a while to set the code also?
