rods and caps 06 s40
rods and caps 06 s40
in tearing down my 2.4, noticed the rods have no notches to retain rod bearings. also the bearings where 90 degrees to the rods. is this normal? I don't see how it keeps bearings from turning inside rods. input please.

The tangs are for humans to align bearings robots don't need then or do humans with install fixture. If the engine runs dry of oil the tangs make about one revolution difference in when the bearing shell spins in rod. The caps are broken caps on those rods and the orientation is CRUCIAL or the rod caps don't close up and crush bearings and they will turn. Broken cp rods are almost universally used today even in diesels and the manufacturing method doesn't readily allow the depression for the bearing tangs.
The rod are trash if the caps are put on wrong as it damages the grain structure of the rod and cap and they will close together.
The bearing shells are installed centered left-right in rod and cap and with edges at cap and rod edges.

There is no special tool fixture but if you assemble engines all day long with a time goal you get a spacer deal for use at factory. You just install them centered in rod and cap.
