'89 Volvo 240 DL Wagon---parts sourcing woes

Post by shutterbugpaul »

I got an '89 Volvo 240 DL wagon back in September that had been donated to charity and went to auction. I towed it back home, not knowing much of anything about what I had purchased.

I had an auto shop go over it and they've found some repairs that need to be made, and one is very urgent.

He's trying to source the parts but doesn't know what he's seeing online. He doesn't see a 240 DL model that's listed, but rather a 244. Is this the same parts?

The parts I need for it are:
Steering Shaft (it's cracked)
Power Steering High pressure line (leaking)
Water Pump (leaking)

Can anyone help me out? Thank you so much!

Run the VIN number through the Volvo Vin decoder and find out what you got. List the information here.

Water pump comes as a kit and the Volvo part number is 271975.

Lower Steering shaft, piece between the two universal joints, is Volvo Part number 1229209.
Upper universal joint Volvo part number 1359403.
Lower universal Joint Volvo part number 6819550.

Power Steering Pressure hose: Volvo Part number 1359461.

If you want to pay only once in your lifetime for quality parts, buy from FCP Euro. Lifetime warranty.

Second parts source IPD+.

Thank you so much! It seems this car was called the 244 model most frequently. Was the 244 the more common sedan where the wagon was the 240? Or...?

The auto mechanic shop just told me steering shaft. I should ask if he's meaning the whole thing (those 3 parts) or which specific section, right?

240 was the series....242, 244, and 245 were models from previous years....in later years, all were called 240s...see rear of your vehicle...240DL.

240 or 245 is typical nomenclature for your vehicle....245 connotes a station wagon.

Normally, when replacing water pump, a timing belt set is also replaced.

Not officially.

1975–1979: Format: Trim letter in front followed by 2XY.
Where: 2 = 200 series, X = the number of cylinders, Y = doors.
X = 2 Coups, Y = 4 Sedans, Y= 5 wagons, Exception: 242 are two-door sedans.

1980–1985: trim level letters followed by 2X0, The Y destination was dropped.
Exceptions: A small number of 260s had four cylinders and a 240 could have six cylinder diesel.

1986–1993 Format 2X0 followed by the trim level.

Your car is a 1989 240 DL wagon (de Luxe). You got the title correct.
If it had been a 1975–1979 it would of been a DL 245.

200 was the series, but 240s were a subset of that series, and as such, 240s were also a series.
