3.2l 2010 thermostat change

Ok..looking to swap my thermostat in a 2010 xc90 3.2.

Ive read
“On the short 6 engines to fill block you can slide the pinch clamp up on the short hose from rad to the trans cooler on left (driver’s) side and slip that hose off the cooler nipple. Use a section of heater hose or clear vinyl tubing that fits the nipple and put funnel into the hose. Add the premixed coolant/water and fill that. It will take about one gallon but you’ll add, water 30 sec and add again a few times.”


The above description of where to refill does not seem very clear to me.
ive pulled out the induction intake pipe and had a look at the left inner side of the radiator and see the two trans cooler lines going into the left hand side header of the radiator. Not seeing a separately described trans cooler or cooler nipple.

Can someone recommend a process to drain down the coolant level to the thermostat only, then retop up the coolant after swapping the thermostat?

However that is not what I did for either of my 3.2's

To bleed the coolant I disconnected the block bleeder hose filled the reservoir until coolant escaped from the block bleeder hose and then reconnected the block bleeder hose.

Then I started the engine and let it get hot enough for the thermostat to open.

I did this with the cap installed.

The reservoir volume dropped.

Next I allowed the engine to cool.

Then I refilled the reservoir.

Note: Land Rover used the Volvo 3.2 in the LR2 so you can use the Land Rover parts if you prefer
(that is what I did for my 2010 S80 3.2)

Thanks for the info, sadly my left side rad header has the transmission cooler integrated internally to the rad and doesnt look like that. The only thing coming out of the left hand side header is the bottom rad hose and the two trans cooler lines.
Ill have a look again, but perhaps they changed the design?

Since you don't have an external heat exchanger you can ignore the recommendation to bleed the coolant at that connection and instead follow the procedure that I followed (See above)

Note: the Thermostat is at a very low point in the system, I recommend that you drain the coolant, replace the thermostat and install new coolant. (i missed this question on my first response)

Please let us know (a post here on this thread is fine) if the Thermostat was broken when you remove it. Also I recommend that you change the coolant hose and O-ring for the engine oil heat exchanger while you are in there.

Anychance you have a screen capture pic of the VADIS block bleed hose you are referring to?
Is it the one to the left of thermostat?

Patrick,

The small hose above the center of the intake manifold is the breather hose for the engine. Any air bubbles will be pushed out this hose into the reservior.

When I filled the coolant (with the small hose shown below removed) I made sure that i kept filling until coolant came out of the location shown and when it did I reconnected the hose.

Note: there should be another small hose that connects to the reservoir to let out any trapped air from the radiator.

If you crawl under the Engine you might find the following

For my 2008 LR2 - I have the drain

For my 2010 S80 - no drain

I don't know if its just a change that was made from 2008 to 2010 or if this is a difference between Land Rover and Volvo.

The location is the back side of the engine (exhaust side)

If you do have it and you remove it remember to only tighten it with 5 Ft*Lbs or 7 Nm

Note: For my S80 I only removed the drain at the radiator to get the coolant out

Thanks all, coolant changed, thermostat changed, thhough I did not need to remove the intake manifold?
Maybe there is more clearance on the later 3.2 engines?
Did not see a petcock on the rad, pulled the lower rad and only got out about 6-6.5 L. I likely missed some in the lowest part of the block or in the heater matrix.
Looks nice and clean and went with a 50/50 mix
