2010 XC90 Transmission fluid change issue!

Post by cybercop »

Changing the trans fluid, LONG over due. Got the green plastic clip, orings, and a case of Toyota type IV ATF.

I think i have the whole integrated drain/fill level screw figured out.

The Bigger one in the pic is the actual drain, and the little one is what you remove to check your level. if the ATF just dribbles out a little, then you are at the right level.

My issue is, when I took the little torx level check bolt out, fluid came gushing out. That is not what I expected. Is it possible that Volvo way over filled the trans at the last service?

So I have three questions:
1) Why did a lot of fluid come out when I just removed the level check bolt?
2) Which of the two fittings on the trans cooler/radiator do I remove The one at the top of the radiator or the one towards the bottom.
3) Is replacing the oring on the level check bolt really necessary? That will require another trip to the stealership!

Another question. Without a Dice or any other computer device, how do you guys make sure the oil is at the right temperature to check the fill level? Do you just wing it?

Is it really that sensitive that being a little over will cause some problems.

I am monkeying with my plug presently and someone stripped the torx threads in mine. New plug and new drain/level check on way from dealer.
Yours may have shown high if fluid was not 50 to 60 Celsius. If it was hotter than than it will expand more and flow out. Not sure which order for hoses. I have a dice knockoff that works great but heard infared thermometer right at pan by plug can get you fairly accurate temp. That is 122 to 140 farenheit.
I'd try the infared.
Good luck.
