Heater Hose

Post by Archer »

Heater hose part #9186849 & 9186847...is it necessary/critical that the hose length be shaped to fit the space? Was thinking about using straight lengths of silicone hose as replacements, but concerned about the bends.

My fear would be that the silicon hoses would kink. I have not used silicon coolant hoses but the vacuum hoses are way more flexible than the standard rubber versions and would easily kink if they aren't dressed in to let them naturally make the desired bend. The bends in the OEM hoses also allow the engine to move quite a bit without yanking the hoses out of the firewall.

Makes sense, thanks Lee. Preemptively replacing coolaning hoses, did lower radiator hose and the turbo inlet hose on 2 cars this past weekend, well needed for sure. Is there any rule-of-thumb with heater hoses for replacement?

Heater hose replacements, such as those carried by Advance Auto are made of a softer rubber than the straight off-the-roll rubber-fabric reinforced heater hose we've used forever. What lee mentions about the tugging effect on the heater core pipes with engine movement of standard heater hose is a concern of mine as well, if there's no anchorage at the firewall. I found some at Advance Auto that are made of the softer rubber and have at least one 90 degree preformed bend that might work. I need to make this update, too, but haven't tried it yet so can't say for sure.

The OEM hoses are really high quality and last 20 years/ 200k plus.

I don’t think we have had a recorded failure here except perhaps an oil soak .org damaged by mechanic?

I replaced mine on my T5 and gave away old ones as spares.

I’ll probably do the same for Evita the S70 as it’s going to grad school away from home

Same here, the V70, that my daughter has taken over, will be accumulating a lot of miles with her college commute, I’ll put an FCP order in for the hoses....and I’m assuming the yellow heater hose o-ring kit, too?
Are there any nuances to changing the hoses, removing from the junction box, etc...?

Be careful with the junction box, or you'll be replacing it too (or do it pre-emptively). Remember how many o-rings/sealers belong on each hose and make sure there isn't 1 or 2 left behind when you remove the hose - often you need a pick for that.

Volvo only on the heater hoses.

Search forum for the DIY I wrote a while back, basically using the existing barb fitting and add standard heater hoses (Grates brand). Works great.
