Passenger front axle replacement question

Post by ylwgto »

Pondering buying an '08 XC90 AWD 3.2 with 113K.

Seller says front, passenger axle needs to be replaced (torn outer boot) as well as struts (but I can do those  ).

If I recall the passenger front axle is the longer, more expensive and complicated replacement axle? I also seem to remember that if some procedure relating to draining tranny ATF before removing the axle is not followed, the angle gear can be flooded with ATF and get screwed up? Does this sound right or is this carry over info from my years with my '04 XC90 2.5T?

How would your rate the difficulty of replacing the passenger side axle? I'm a confident and experienced DIYer, but am leery of the x factor of North Eastern cars and rust complicating parts swapping. I also know popping hte axles out wrong can damage inner seals, correct?

Thanks!

The right one has a bearing carrier. It does not have a locking transmission clip but still needs pushed out a little by prying at a small edge. It may get stuck at the carrier bearing lower cover, use a small pbry bar and may put some grease inside for the next time - this cover goes back only one way. You still need to undo perhaps the two lower strut bolts -see about camber setting. I would say not a bad job but I did struggle sliding in the new axle because it's long and wobbles - extra hands would make it easier. May check the outer boot on the other side as well (this is the one that gets stuck inside the transmission) and struts will need new spring seats (Sachs or CRP/Rein)

Thanks.
Is there a write up or video DIY tutorial for this (specifically the 3.2)?
if i buy the car I'd be replacing the struts with full quick struts at the same time, so you are right...maybe a good time to replace the other side outer boot as well.

Getting ready to do the 2006 XC90 V8 Front Right (passenger side) Axle. Have any tutorials been located since last this thread was active? Any tips / tricks for this project are appreciated. It sounds like there is no circ clip and no need to use chisel to pop axle from trans? is that correct.

MacPherson suspension is a great design, a simple DIY environment. You want to free up knuckle from the strut and tie-rod, but leave the knuckle fastened over the LCA. Angle outward and rotate the knuckle and then pull out the passenger side axle.

Search Youtube for DIY.

Here are your steps to make it easy and fun - no force is needed:
- choke the rear wheels
- remove wheel cap, and loosen the axle screw
- safely raise the front of the XC90 on jack-stand
- install ratcheting strap between the front LCAs, firmly; it will take away upward force on front strut
- remove carrier-bearing mounting bolts
- remove passenger side wheel
- remove brake caliper and set it on a 10-gal bucket under the wheel well
- remove sway bar link at the strut
- remove tie rod at the knuckle
- remove axle screw at the knuckle
- remove strut at the knuckle

Employ bungee cord to hang and support axle while you carefully steer and pull out the axle

Xheart - Thank you for the high level tutorial. I am looking for a more granular "for dummies" step by step tutorial. I've seen the step by step detailed one for 850's and other jobs on MVS but not for the 2006 XC90 passenger axle. I'm more of a "paint by numbers" mechanic.

To help you extrapolate, see cn90's viewtopic.php?t=91985
May be you are best prepared to write the step-by-step. Meanwhile, here is the parts view:
