car starts without cam sensor? testing

wanting to test the different sensors on my 2001xc70, i removed the cam sensor on the back of the engine and tried starting and it started...question is should it, is the sensor faulty??.

If the ECM cannot detect the camshaft sensor it uses a lookup table. The engine will run but it will not be optimized.

What does your diagnostic scanner say when the camshaft sensor is plugged in?
