The car started making funny noises and throwing error messages today when my wife was driving it. Once I got home and the car had cooled down, the messages (Anti-skid disabled) and the funny sounds were mostly gone. Only remnant was a clicky-ratchety sound from somewhere in the steering column, when turning the wheel. That noise is new and is there all the time now.
Then I drove it about 15 minutes and once it got hot it started making the noise she had really noticed prior, like a whiny rattle or buzz from the center of the car, like under the radio but more to the front of the car. Yes, maybe near the AWD box. Pretty loud, increases up and down in cadence with wheel speed. Not a bearing howl, much more buzzy. A bit more noisy under load (on throttle) than when coasting, unaffected by engine rev or changing gears. Car doesn't shake or anything from it.
I hooked up VIDA and got these three codes:
BCM-0095 - Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM
BCM-0109 - Communication between control units Communication problems with SAS, Internal fault
SAS-000E - Steering wheel angle sensor Internal Fault
More tests within VIDA yielded three additional codes:
DEM - 0006 Pump Faulty signal
DEM - 0007 Hydraulic pressure Faulty value
SUM - 0337 CAN-signal, SAS control unit Faulty signal
All six codes are new, haven't seen them during my ownership last ~40k miles. Also, this car has been running FWD since I bought it and for unknown time before that. At purchase it was diagnosed with a bad angle gear, probably the collar, and I elected to leave it that way.
I've read a few accounts online involving some of these codes and it sounds like I should at least check the wiring to the DEM (under the rear passenger seat?).
Otherwise I really don't know what to suspect as the/a root cause here and where I should start when I can get back to this tomorrow night.

All them control modules are on the High Speed CAN bus.

Apologies and thanks to those who replied, I never realized it. After a big diversion I am hoping to address this problem again. Car has been sitting. Basically runs fine and quiet until warm, then I get the clickety-clack (see above) and anti-skid message.
I drove the car 20 minutes this afternoon and 4 hours later with the car off and the trunk light on, battery reads 12.22 V. That's not great. No install date marked but that battery came with the car 3 years and 35k miles ago.
Hoping it didn't cook any modules. A simple steering angle sensor replacement would perhaps be an easy way out of this if I can confirm it, but there but seems there is an AWD problem too, or at the root. Curious to hear your thoughts jonesg (or anyone).
The PO didn't know the angle gear was bad until I had the car inspected pre-purchase. So no it was not removed. I just checked and the 7.5 A fuse is still installed and intact to the AWD haldex pump. That's the AOC pump correct, more to the rear?

You didn't say whether the prop shaft is turning when the wheels are off the ground in drive....engine running.
If yes the problem is at the rear end.
If no its the angle gear.
The cheap easy way out for many guys is remove the prop shaft and put a blanking plate on the angle gear unit.
I don't know any details on that, whether the angle box is eliminated or what.
But they make it FWD only.
Next cheapest way is get a salvage angle gear box. Or ebay the parts.
Lots of youtube videos on this problem.
There is a rebuild kit but you need to drop it and see if the inner splines are toast, if so then you need to replace the whole unit.
To me it sounds like the opportunity to rebuild with a new spline sleeve has now passed, it shattered and took out the center shaft splines too.

What does batt voltage show with engine running?
Could be tired battery or regulater or cables etc.
On mine it was the small signal wire on the back of the alternator. You just have to chase it down with a meter.

Prop shaft is not turning and hasn't since I got the car, the reason for lack of AWD is definitely the angle gear. Although I suppose that means I don't really know the condition of the Haldex, but it may be OK.
Today I got it warmed up and then on four jack stands and confirmed the whiny rattle and screech comes from the angle gear itself.
What's not clear to me is how all of those codes come from the angle gear suddenly getting worse, any ideas on that? Or obvious to anyone?
The path forward may well be to just pull the angle gear regardless and go from there, but I'll have to decide if I want to invest in that myself or send it to the shop. Removing the prop shaft is not an easy way out here because the angle gear os noisy inside. Angle gear swap seems relatively straightforward after I track down the part, that collar looks like a hassle though. When we bought the car we got the purchase price marked down to offset the cost of a shop-based angle gear replacement. So that is still an option here.

You really won’t know for certain until you get the bevel gear on the bench. Hopefully you can get away with just a new collar sleeve. Worst case the input splines on the BG are toast or the ring/pinion gears/bearings are shot and you’ll need to supply a donor BG plus a new collar sleeve.
Do you have air tools? Or access to some? Sometimes the collar sleeves come off easily, sometimes they don’t. If you have an air compressor you can grind a slot on the face of the collar sleeve & use an air hammer and crescent wrench to keep the sleeve straight while hammering it off the trans. I learned that trick from Greg850R.
Edit: is this M66 or the 6-speed Volvo auto trans? I’ve gotten lucky finding guys parting out R cars & have gotten M66 bevel gears for as low as $150. In fact, one of them had a new collar sleeve already on it! Both sets of splines looked new.

I do have mid-range quality air tools, that's encouraging I may hit you up for more detail when I get there.
My car has the 6-speed auto trans. Looks like this angle gear (Volvo # 36000343) is specific to 06-07 V70R/S60R auto transmission - 6 speed.

Yes it is. A BG from an Aisin trans won’t mate up, as far as I know (but don’t hesitate to correct me if you discover I’m wrong). If you or your spouse has access to Facebook/marketplace maybe start poking around & inquire with people parting out cars in the area. Scrap yard is always an option but it’s a good amount of work to do on your back in the gravel.
Erie usually has some as well. Just get clear images of the input splines.
