850 - Need a new key or two for my '96 850T

Post by Gtech940 »

Just bought an 850 T wagon, the single key that came with it is pretty worn.

I read many people buying cheap keys from "Hendrick Volvo in Kansas City".

However google pulls up only an old wordpress site, doesn't look like they still exist.

Is there another cheap source that isn't the $15 for 2 from Thailand? (are they any good? I'd think not), I called a Hendrick in SC and they quoted me $83 for 1 key.

Be sure that they know that you only
need a basic, unchipped key. Some
dealership order writers don’t even
know that they exist without a chip.

It’s probably worth calling around to
local locksmiths for a quote, as well.

I had two keys made ( '96 T ) for about $ 48.00 by Volvo of Phoenix. They ordered the blanks and cut them on site. This was maybe 9 months ago.
Don't know if that will help or not....

Thanks, I'll make a few more calls to a couple other dealers!

I got 1 key cut and picked it up from local dealer the next day for $60. All they asked for was my insurance with vin number. This was 4 years ago.

Dealers local to me are all quoting $112 CAD for 1 single key. Part number 6817981. I'm going to keep looking, haven't checked with locksmiths yet.

There is a key that is part number 9447946. It's only $25.

It's listed as a blank key, and listed as working for both 940 and 850...Only I have a 940 as well, and the 850 key and the 940 key are very different.

The 850 key is on the left. Am I correct that 9447946 is the key-style on the right? (aside from it being a valet key)

There are also part numbers 9187694, 9187695, they also look almost the same.

I've bought 3 pairs on eBay ONLY from this listing.

Send in to Overland park Volvo (suburb of Kansas City, KS). Provide $5 for each key you want cut. Figured out how much shipping is (mine $3.85). I've had 2 keys cut plus shipping ($14). It cost me in total less than $30 to buy and have cut. So send in keys, a letter stating what you want done, copy of (something with VIN number) your title or registration and ID/DL, a check for however much.

Thanks very much everyone! I will try to get it cut locally at a locksmith (I'm in Canada) but will be contacting Overland Volvo if that fails. I'll be buying the $25 blanks from Volvo.
