Willie Beamans 98 s70 no money build

Post by WillieBeamen »

So it all begins when my ex totaled my 00 Silverado, I ended up getting six hundred and fifty dollars for it in scrap weight. That was a couple weeks ago. So the search began for something, not just anything, something dirt cheap. que Facebook market place. so this is what I drummed up, and ending up coming home with. It's still on the trailer while I'm typing this. Going to pressure wash underneath in the morning and roll it off.

Image

Its a 1998 s70 5 speed N/A, It was brought back from Germany while the previous (who knows how many???) owner was overseas.

Cost $450 dollars with a pile of problems. So, I don't know shit about Volvos, and broke. Great combo right? haha. But I'm pretty good with vehicles, went to tech school, heavy diesel mechanic blah blah. Anyways, this post is going to be the build of this neglected, but straight body Volvo.....for cheap/tastefully ghetto. Because the way my luck is with vehicles, some dumb blonde will jump a ditch with it in a couple years. :(

It needs, a clutch, M/S combo, AND lol an
Ignition switch- Complete lack of gauges and a dragging starter.
Drivers door panel- ripped up and self tapping screwed together.
Left rear window inop.
Trunk lid that tries to murder you
Corner lights
sunroof leaks
every interior clip is broken from being disassembled incorrectly
and so so so so so so much more. I think it was abused from 2011 till now. BUT! no point just looking at it, I have it apart before i even rolled it off the trailer. But it runs. haha

So out comes the ignition switch
Image
Its chewed up from opening the can up. But I got in and sanded the contact points with 600 grit and contact cleaner. I have the harness side soaking in QD cleaner hopefully this helps the dragging starter and no gauges, but well have to wait until the morning.

Working top down, the next order of business is waterproofing. I don't like wet nasty interiors so the the roof racks are already off (aftermarket), and sunroof glass is already out. I pushed up the glass and got it reluctantly into the vent position and unscrewed the glass out. I oiled the linkage with a little ATF and found a clip from the sunscreen in the track. There was also a huge piece of material that was kind of like a cigarette fliter clogging the left side sunroof drain. This should cut down on the mildew tremendously (But it does give it that Volvo charm, nothing smells like it).
EKK RUST
Image
So I soaked the metal frame with ATF to slow the rust and cleaned the seals with silicone paste. Pic include are the roof racks I'm going to refinish.

Swelling up
Image
paid close attention to the mounting points.

The ugly truth.
HAHA but the worlds not perfect. One day ill get the hair up my ass to paint and reseal the metal frame. But I'm on a schedule, I just want it to slide in the closed position correctly for now. IE NOT LEAK.
That as much as I really have at the moment, its just day #2 of Volvo ownership. Tomorrow the pressure washer comes out. I'm shooting for the end of next week to have this transmission out. and see what's going on with the clutch. sorry I had to change pic hosting

I wasn't able to see them either.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Sorry about the lack of working pics, and the lack of yesterdays update like I had planned. But she's in the driveway ready for Mondays surgery.
Starting yesterday (11/20) all the little stuff is becoming more apparent.
Starting off, I awoke to the sight of the ATF soaked sunroof seals swelling nicely from the night before. (Thank god no rain that night)
Image
Next I went out and finished lubricating the sunroof linkage. ATF drips off a screwdriver on the metal parts and silicone on the diffuser thing. This little arm was completely frozen solid but I worked it back and forth until it was free again.
Image
Gotta clean the sunroof drains. I used some 12 g wire to "drain snake" any obstructions, and dawn from a spray bottle to flush it down.
Image
Finally I threw the glass back in, adjusted, and adjusted some more. finally got it in position where it vents. Starts the backwards decent into the cassette and hits something in the track half way. SO close, but I don't want to take the headliner down to investigate further I feel there's more pressing issues. but does it leak? HELL NAHH HAHA
Image

Moving on, I popped the hood and was just giving the fuse boxes a once over before I got out the pressure washer and found this surprise.
Image'
That's the DEFRST fuse, so something was going on with that. I pulled that fuse and the next 2 adjacent fuses just out of precaution and deemed unimportant in the basic starting of the engine in the moment. I cant tell you off hand what they are.

I'm sure you know what happened here. I hope I didn't wash the dirt that holds it together. main priority was the undercarriage.
Image
I was pretty bummed to see that the hitch was overloaded at one point in its life and pulled the rear bumper down like 1/2". Oh well remember $400 car.
I finished the night starting to clean up the roof racks. though ill rarely use them I'm sure.

So, I didn't do much toady besides rolling it off the trailer and dragging it up my driveway. The E-brake drum decided to only allow backwards movement from partially seizing, and I can only pull the e-brake to the first click. BARLELY. But brakes were already a given the general disrepair of the car, but they didn't make trying to push up an incline any easier. ended up having to use the truck to pull it. But the service brakes worked well controlling it off the ramp thank god.
here she is on the ground
Image
sad interior. I haven't even started on any of that yet.
Image
Being in east NC this looks like a tree branch got ahold of it in a storm/hurricane or something.
Image
and what I see when I'm drinking beer.

An update on the ignition switch. I was having troubles with the starter dragging and No gauge cluster action. whenever I connected the battery I got the key in the ignition beep. WITH NO KEY IN THE IGNTION.
So I got it in the driveway an decided to test the "tinkered with" ignition switch. The key in ignition warning chime stopped, cool. but now I get no crank. HAHA Go from a dragging starter to no starter. pffft. So I bang on it with a back of the screwdriver and play with it, and I get a jolt like the battery was dead, and that was it. I guess 1998 is the special year for ignition switch's haha. so I'm going to go to Foss and see if i cant find another 98. But worse comes to worse. bye bye Volvo switch, hello generic pushbutton.

That's all from me this week. tomorrow is trout fishing day.
