Volvo Repair Database Joy of joys.. New stereo

Post by luketrash »

Well, the first official "just for me" work I've done on the 850 was putting in the Alpine stereo I ordered through Crutchfield. It ended up being 150 bucks cheaper with all of the free 'throw-ins' at Crutchfield compared to my local Best Buy... I wanted a stereo to control my ipod, and something that looks good... I have a thing against visible wires and accessories tethered to things.

The only pre-install step I took was taking the time to solder the Alpine wiring harness to the Volvo wiring harness they sent. I shrink wrapped the joints instead of my hasty butt splices or even worse, electrical tape over twisted wires.. I must be growing up or something...

Taking out the Volvo radio is crazy simple.. Poke the spring loaded buttons in on the sides, and it's begging you to pull it out by hand, with no tools. I was presented with a gaping, but clean double DIN opening. I chose to put my stereo down low because it's that much further from prying eyes and further from the heat ducts in the dash. Since the stereo basically sits on the plastic of the console in there, I decided to put down a piece of adhesive backed felt to pad the stereo from shock (and making any rattling noises..)
Image

The only hangup in this job was figuring out how to get the metal 'holder' to actually anchor into the console. The triangular tabs just weren't matching up with anything they could get a grip on. I had to use a pocket saw to enlarge the square openings.. Hopefully the original Volvo radio can go back in if need be, and still lock into place.
Image

The plastic 'pocket' that came free with the rig was easy to work with.. Just put it together according to the Volvo instructions and pop it in.. Be aware, that once this thing is locked in, it isn't coming out unless you want to destroy it and possibly the dash console opening..

The stoner at Best Buy was telling me their pro installers would make it such that I'd store my ipod in that dash pocket, but that just looks too ghetto to me, so I decided to route the ipod cord through the side of the glove box. That way the ipod is out of sight of me, and any theives.
Image

From inside the glovebox.. I put the hole far enough up, I won't lose any stray marbles on accident!
Image

I have to say, this is the 2nd easiest install I've ever done.. (My F150 was easy, and is single DIN sized)
Image

I also love how everything just WORKS. Instead of dinking around with the damn FM tranmitter by Monster Co. that my wife has, I have a direct input and it talks to the head unit very quickly. Here it is talking to the stereo...

And I'm done...

Minimal programming of the multi-band EQ, and BBE sound processing, and I'm off to the races... Finally I can listen to MY music, without static. Now I won't notice my Volvo breaking down though, because I'm liable to have the tunes jammin.

If any of you are paying 200 bucks+ for an OEM Volvo CD headunit, I'd say to nix it in favor of this.. I paid 209 total for the headunit + the alpine ipod cord (which is much longer than I imagined.) This would be easy to 'uninstall' if I sell the car, and the sound is amazing.. Just like anything, as time has progressed, you get a whole lot more for 200 bucks than you did 10 years ago.

The OEM SC810 or whatever was in there (am/fm/tape) sounded OK, if you could pick up a station (I have that crappy in-glass antenna)

The bass had to remain turned down, due to something in the driver's door vibrating (annoying!)

With this Alpine, I could turn the bass down at 100hz but boost it at 60hz, so I get that low end without the vibration. The treble is much better too. The BBE stuff supposedly changes the delay on highs and lows such that they 'reach your ears at the same time'... I don't understand it, but it's like a Loudness feature that actually sounds good.

I like it a lot.. the mp3s on the ipod sound awesome. 10x better than any FM transmitter I've listened to them through. And the integration of everything was headache free.. The crutchfield volvo connector was perfect. The ipod cable hooks up perfect. After I read the manual a bit, I can work the stereo now too...

I highly recommend it, and I usually don't really care much about car stereo these days.

great write-up Luke - many thanks!

Can you supply the model number of the Alpine?

Question: does the iPod charge while it's connected to the Alpine with the Alpine cable? And does the stock volvo changer still talk to the Alpine, and take control from it - or is that now redundant?

cheers

The model I chose was the CDA-9856 because it not only controls the ipod, but can hook up a sirius/xm tuner, HD radio, and a changer.

The problem with the Volvo CD changer is that Alpine switched over to this AI-Net protocol sometime in the recent past. The Volvo changer is made by Alpine, but it won't hook up to these new radios. They may sell an adapter though. However, the headunit plays MP3s on CD discs. You can fit more music on one CD in mp3 format than in the Volvo changer. The sound is excellent. In fact, I am very surprised how high the Volvo tweeters in the dash go. They're almost shrill in my ears now.

Now I'm contemplating pulling a couple of Kicker Solobaric woofers and a large amplifier out of retirement(last had them in my 91 Volvo 244 back in 2001).. I need to find a creative way to mount one or two woofers in the hatch such that they won't really interfere in its function of being a station wagon.

Haha, my home is completely free of cassette tapes now. My 98 Beetle came with a tape player and I thought they were obsolete by that point.. Almost like getting an 8 track player in a 1986 car from the factory....

I got the Alpine for the convenience of hooking it up to the ipod, but honestly, if you burn a CDR full of mp3s, you have room for about 10 full length albums of music. I have just had a CDR in the car since I put it in. I'm too afraid someone will steal my ipod.

This looks like the best solution. It's a little more money that the adapter:
$200 apposed to $140
But your getting a new stereo (basically for an extra $60, plus another compartment.

Now will this Alpine fit in my S70?

Thanks you!
