Rear window won't close

Post by wrybread »

The rear window in my 2000 s70 suddenly won't close. The other side won't close either unless I pull the window up with my hands while pressing up on the window control. But the other side is stubbornly stuck and here comes the rain...

Any tips by chance?

Cover it up with trash bags and blue painters tape for the moment. Sounds like either the window regulator is bad or the window switch is starting to go.

Search here on MVS and the rest of internet for how to remove the door covering without (much) breaking of plastic bits. Once you get the door cover off, you may be able to see what failed. In my experience, some plastic clip or slide aged out and failed. Common parts are available on IPS or FCP Euro. Not likely a motor failure. If no broken bits in the bottom of the door, check out the electrical supply.

With rain fast approaching we took the panel off, broke only 1 or 2 bits, damn the torpedoes it's about to start raining for 2 days and it's parked on a city street where tarped windows attract crackheads. I have, alas, had a crackhead live in my car for a few days, and it's much more destructive than a few broken door panel mounts.

With the panel off we could hear a noise whenever the driver or rear door window switch was activated, but it was impossible to move the window, even when pulling on it. So it's getting power, switches are working, etc.

Interestingly the other side rear window doesn't usually close on it's own, but closes just fine with the slightest bit of help with my hands. That's a stumper, or maybe just a coincidence.

Anyway we couldn't tell what exactly failed and it was starting to drizzle so we removed the 4 screws holding the electric motor in place and backed the worm gear out (maybe wrong term). That let us close the window by hand but wasn't easy to get the worm gear back in place past the electric motor brushes (maybe wrong term again).

Anyway, don't try this at home, but it'll do for now.

Snooze button successfully pressed.

If you don't hear the motor buzz then I would suggest checking both the driver's switch and the problematic window's switch.

Clear packing tape over the top of the door will hold the window up and not attract attention from more than a few feet away. It might peal some paint if left on too long.
