What glue to put the sunroof back together ?

Post by Goupil »

Hello,

Last summer I replaced my leaky sunroof with a used one. On a slow day I took it apart and found a lot of rust !

I since got the frame cleaned and rustproofed now, and I need to glue the glass back on.

What should I use ? Any silicone sealant made for metal/glass ? Some proper windshield glue ?

I'd be inclined to take it to a windscreen / glass shop and have them do it, or tell you what not to use and sell you the right stuff. Could you tell what sort of pookie they used originally ? I think that windscreen sealant is a butyl rubber, not silicon, but I could be wrong.

I had to re-attach the clamps for my power windows to my driver's window on my Toyota Sienna a year ago.
I too wanted to figure out what to use to attach to glass.

All the research I did pointed to 3M™ Windo-Weld™ Super Fast Urethane Part Number 08609.

huh.. just realized there's no "w" at the end of Windo in that name. Never realized that.

There are other window Urethane products out there from other vendors but I was able to find the 3M variant locally. it worked well. It was like thick silicone caulk.

Note: 3M also makes 3M Auto Glass Urethane Windshield Adhesive, 08693
It's 1/2 the price of the product I used above. I don't know what the difference is. I have tried searching for some official word on the difference and when to use each but have failed.

Not sure what was originally on there, all I know it that it was a pain to remove  Felt pretty hard, harder than the usual silicone stuff
