A couple of years back I managed to snag a surprisingly decent 1988 245 wagon off ebay, and I'm starting to get around to doing the "tweaks and preventative/deferred maintenance" phase after the kickdown cable return spring got tired, and I figured it'd be better to just do the manual swap I'd been planning instead of fixing it, since that would require a couple gallons of ATF to flush out this poor thing, as I don't think it'd ever had that done, and I'd already collected the lion's share of the bits and bobs I needed.
One of the tweaks is backdating the steering wheel to the older two button design, because I really liked how much more responsive to just a thumb the buttons were than the year-appropriate one that's currently in the car.
The thing is, I don't want to invite problems, and having owned a couple earlier wagons previously, I know the wiring in these tends to get a bit crusty and nasty over the years. I'd like to take it apart and clean everything up, but I haven't the foggiest idea how to get the horn buttons out to access the wires without breaking the plastic, or even if I can.
Also, thoughts on rejuvenating the rubber would be greatly appreciated, most advice for steering wheel refurb that I could find is either for older bakelite-style hard wheels or more modern fatty padded ones.
