Heater Hose Replacement Trouble

Heater Hose Replacement Trouble

1998 S70 T5

Trying to replace the two heater hoses that run from the firewall to the engine. Looks like it has to be done from the top rather than from under the car. I'm having trouble removing things to get access to the heater hose engine connections. I can't find much on this anywhere. I see some write-ups on the 850 Turbo and the S70 GLT, but not on the S70 T-5 and there appear to be some differences between these models.

I removed the bottom part of the air box, but can't figure out how to remove the large, hard plastic, accordion pipe/tube that connects the top of the air box to the turbo. I tried to separate the MAF from the accordion pipe but these are both hard plastic and loosening the pipe clamps just allows it to spin around. I tried a flat screw driver to separate them but that only distorts the plastic. Anyone have experience with this situation? I think I need to remove this entire pipe/tube from the turbo to get access to the heater hose engine block connections.

Also, it looks like I need to remove the lower radiator hose at the engine to get better access to the heater hoses which won't be a problem.

Use stiff cord to tie the snorkel to the motor mount, then use the air box to pry the MAF snout out

I'll try to locate the pictures of my heater core replacement on my 98 S70 T5. I did bypass/eliminate the plastic firewall coupling and used 2 rubber heater hoses instead.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I did buy the Volvo replacement hoses and the o-ring kit, so all that I want to do is a replace the old, original, heater hoses with the OEM hoses. I noticed Robert's video of doing a turbo replacement which gives a better look at the part I'm trying to remove from the turbo. abscate referred to it as a "snorkel" which seems a fitting description of the part I'm trying to remove.

I guess I'll jack up the car and try to loosen the "snorkel" clamp at the turbo, also there are some vacuum connections to disconnect, then I should be able to remove it.

The snorkel piece will pull off of the turbo - you just have to loosen the hose clamp till it spins, and then pull hard, wiggling it as yo do.
The MAF likewise will pull free. Just takes a lot of pulling to get it free. I know its weird how it will spin freely but won't come apart, but it will. Tying it off to the top torque mount as abscate suggests will make it easier, so you'll have both hands to pull.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Careful not to break any small vaccum hoses in the area.

The first time I had this issue, I used a large flat blade screwdriver wedged in the gap, and some redirected anger. It Was going to yield. Once I pried it apart enough that one spot was over the edge of the retaining ring, the rest of it crept over in a circular fashion. When it finally gives, be careful you don't crash into something sharp. You could get a contusion.

Wow, that photo submitted by abscate sums up pretty well the measures you need to take to separate the MAF from the snorkel. I'll remember this when, and if, I have to replace the MAF. Yes, foggydogg, I can imagine the consequences should one not take precautions doing when doing this.

I finished the job, didn't have to remove the MAF and snorkel to do so, but it would've been much easier I'm sure. I used a bungee cord to hold the air box cover, MAF, snorkel out of the way to get to the hose connections. You don't have to raise the car to replace the heater hoses on this model. All work is done from the top. What really helped were long 1/4" extensions and a swivel adapter (Harbor Freight) for the 7mm hose clamps. The hoses I removed were original but I couldn't find any obvious holes or ruptures. So, the car now has new Volvo hoses. The reason for the job was a sudden coolant leak which I thought was coming from that area. I changed the turbo coolant hose, and lower radiator hose too. All I know is, there are no leaks now and the temp gauge is normal.
So, moving on to the P0455. Tried a new gas cap and it seems okay for now, but I'm thinking it can't be that easy.
