Engine skips after timing belt replacement

Post by wool »

I was in the midst of replacing the timing belt on my 2004 XC70. I've replaced belts several times without incident. Unfortunately, the crank pulley would not budge. I set the timing marks, locked the cams then sent the car to a shop to remove the crank pulley and replace the timing belt. The next day I get a call to come to the shop because the crank would not turn. As it turned out I was able to turn the crank a full 360 degrees. I realized he was trying to turn the crank while in a compression stroke. He rotated the crank several times, replaced the belt, and removed the cam locks. He had problems starting the car. Once it was running he did a road test and found that the engine was "skipping" until it was at a higher RPM. Any thoughts?

Do a compression test to rule out valve damage.

Can you describe what “ skipping “ means?

you dont actually have to remove the crank pulley to change the belt, i just remove the plastic bottom cover and slide the belt in

Maybe an ignition coil that's bad? That feels like "skipping" I guess. If they are old, just pulling them off the plugs might cause them to break.
