Auto trans delay engaging followed by thump 02 S60

My 02 S60 with 65000 mi has a consistant problem with the transmission getting into drive. Either from N to D or P to D. It sometimes has up to a 2 to 3 second delay and then a thump into D. Does not seem to matter if it is warm or cold when this happens. Any ideas out there?

My '02 V70 does the same as well but only going into drive on a cold morning. I think it is one of the solenoids that have gone bad. They are accessible from under the side cover.
It may be wise to flush the trans fluid before trying anything else. Make sure you use the proper fluid. Go to the Toyota dealer and buy a case of their "Type 4" fluid. About $6.00 per liter there as opposed to $20.00 each at the Volvo stealership. Same fluid. Same manufacturer, Exxon/Mobil.

You can get the proper fluid at the Toyota dealer and also on line...just make sure that for your car you use JWS-3309 compliant fluid.
