ipd plate

Post by magna224 »

Does the ipd plate add any rigidity or does it just flex? My cars on ipd blue springs and koni yellows so i know its very protective at this point but my car is someday intended to be mostly track oriented and im interested if its worth the weight. I have one in the garage but ive never installed it, id like to know other users experiences.

The ipd skid plate isn't structural at all.

Perhaps the weight will be offset by the aerodynamics  . One excursion off the road from the marbles and it could be a scrap vs some damaged underneath. The type of fasteners that come with the kit and the weight of the material vs the weight of the vehicle would not give you much structural improvement unless you weld that on. Even then it's minimal. You just need to improve your driving / time a bit to overcome the extra weight  .

I would disagree on that fitting this plate would not stiffen things up. If it is bolted to the sub-frame then it will stiffen that up somewhat as if I recall correctly it is a pretty stout item. However, it will only stiffen up the sub-frame. You are then dependent on the condition of the sub-frame to frame mounts. If you replace those with poly versions and and a strut brace it would increase the front end stiffness. You could add IPD's sway-bars, or at least one from a V70XC which is the thickest version they made of standard P80.

By itself, it is mostly a engine oil pan guard!

It's bolted with rubber isolators and just wedged into slots on the subframe, IIRC. Mine didn't come with the hardware (got it out of the yard), but looking at the ipd install instructions, it isn't a solid mount.

The Delrin SF bushings and the STBs I built did more to stiffen things up than this thing would. It's mainly to act as protection to the oil pan, etc.
