I know! I really wanted to concentrate on getting the timing marks lined up and getting the timing belt tensioner set up properly. After I did the "smoke test" and it ran fine I cracked open a beer while finishing the final assembly.

I did it from the top using a technique called the "Gibbons method". It was very accessible from the top. Google it.

Chasing the caliper threads is a good plan. If you can not locate the proper tap, use an old fitting and cutting a couple notches with a hacksaw the length of the thread. This will work OK to clean up dirty, rusty threads. Do not make the cut deeper than the thread depth as this will let the fitting...
