Do you check the ATF when running, or with engine off/

Front end clunking sound when going over bumps, rough road, etc. Was intermittent, but getting worse, and now notice a sqeaking sound also. I noticed a 3/4" gap at top of strut tower, inside engine compartment, which I haven't noticed before.

I pulled my rubber all weather floor mats yesterday, and discovered the carpet on driver's side is wet with coolant.
The reservoir is just above min. mark.
Approx 85,000 miles.
