Take it to an independent shop that has a hot water parts washer. We have one in our shop (made by Hotsy Pressure Washer) and they work great, and don't mess up your wife's dish washer.

I have the exact same setup except factory rims. Mine does the same thing on bumps that on other cars take in stride. It did it before when it was stock also, so I think it is just a crappy old design that Volvo had for these cars.
