Thanks! I thought about dropping the suspension but just couldn't bring myself to do it with laundry list of other things that need attention. I intentionally made the inspection hole large enough that I can easily access all of the hoses below. Hopefully, I won't need to!

Okay, I've swapped evap hoses on 850's, V/S70's of all shapes and sizes but the 2001 XC70 AWD set-up is a new form of hell. The entire canister is completely inaccessible. Secondly, the standard J-Hose isn't the correct size. Apparently, I need this: Volvo part number 9155990.

Gottcha, so my question then becomes: why would having a bad starter installed trigger the "immobilizer, see manual" message? Once I put a working starter in no more immobilizer message and the car runs fine.
