Update. Checked the resistance as suggested and the sensor was giving values close to those given at 20 and 80 degrees. My local mechanic now thinks problem is with ECU. Do you agree

Thanks for your reply. The temperature gauge appears to be working correctly but I will test the sensor asap.

I have a 1999 S70 2litre non Turbo. Does anyone know if I will get an improved petrol consumption if I use 97 octane in stead of 95 octane and if so how much and will it pay for the extra petrol cost.

The Mass air meter measures the air going into the engine so that the ECU can decide how much fuel for the the injectors to squirt into each cylinder.

I had a similar problem with a new battery going flat. It was caused by the belt driving the alternator slipping slightly so it wasn't charging properly.
