Misha, you are correct that as long as the axis of the puller screw is aligned with the axis of the pump shaft the 3 jaws will pull straight and evenly. If the puller goes crooked and the pulley is really stuck on the shaft there could be damage.

A small report on the pump replacement, which went quite smoothly. I'd give it a 3/10 on the difficulty scale, mostly because there's a couple annoying bolts and special tools required. I used a 3 jaw puller to remove the power steering pulley, and the reinstalling tool from this rental tool - https ...

I used a 3 jaw puller to remove the pulley which was quite effortless. Made a loud 'pop' when it became unstuck from the shaft, then just had to thread it off. I threaded a 3/8-16 bolt into the shaft so that the puller didn't mar up the shaft. The diameter of the puller's shaft was also too large ...

The tool used for reinstalling the pulley did work perfectly however!

I used a 3 jaw puller to get the pulley off, worked brilliantly.

I can now confirm that this tool does not work for removing the pulley... The collar for the puller is ever so slightly too large, it slipped and chewed up the lip on the pulley...
