To avoid the uncomfortable situation of crawling under the car while the engine is running, some folks have pulled a vacuum on the tailpipe with a shop vac and used cigar smoke to locate leaks (visual evidence being more definitive). The one I just bought has about 290k miles, and sounds like a hotrod! I'm not sure if it maybe has a hole in the exhaust, but it is what I'd expect an R (or T5 maybe?) to sound like, very 'spirited'.
