12" Cluster - no temp gauge.

I love our XC90. I love everything about it, drives like a dream, absolutely everything works like the fabulous Swedish luxury SUV that it is.

However, It does not have an engine temperature gauge. :(

It bothers me.

Thoughts?

Re: All of a sudden she started making this loud knocking/tapping

This sounds like a collapsed / stuck lifter. It's a high tinny knock that's tied to RPM. If it was electrical / ignition it wouldn't be this uniform. These hydraulic lifters rotate in their bores during operation and I think you'll find one is stuck in it's bore. It's a job I'm afraid, and the lifte...

Re: Ongoing issue with Transmission Range Switch Topic is solved

I had this issue in my '96 850 a few years back. I replaced the PNP switch which improved things, but what really solved it was finding the melted wire short in the harness going away from the PNP switch to the ECM. Found it by looking for shorts to ground on the harness. I'll separated wires and re...

Re: Humming sound..can't figure it out..audio attached

I don't know if you have any urethane mounts on the engine or the rear diff, but this sounds like harmonic resonance which is why it's only presenting itself in a narrow speed / rpm range. If the mounts are stock, I'd check all of the existing motor mounts and the mounts on the rear diff. Bad gear l...

Re: Knocking noise

Do you gave an update on this issue? If it's a high tinny knock it may be a stuck lifter that goes away when warm, if the knock is a low clunk-clunk it's more likley a low end thing like a rod, but at 95k I wouldn't believe it unless the oil was changed infrequently?

Re: Advice on roof racks and carriers [2014 XC90]

I have a 2017 XC90, but it's basically the same idea. Yakima doesn't have a fitment for my car, but Thule does. Unfortunately the load bars and towers from Thule were more than $660. I checked with my local dealer and they have factory Volvo load bars (made by Thule) for $275. They fit perfectly, ha...

Re: 1996 850 Glove Compartment Latch Issue

It's broken plastic underneath the vinyl for the dash above the u-shaped hook for the latch. My '96 had the same problem. There isn't much you can do but epoxy a stick of plastic behind the broken pieces and hope for the best. I ended up replacing my dash from a junkyard find because my AC evap box ...

Re: The NEW (2018) BLOOPERS AND BLUNDERS THREAD

Took out the the dual catalytic converter setup on my 2001 S80 to get at some other part and installed the front O2 sensors backwards. It idled okay but the signal for rich / lean was ass backwards and the car ran so rich it set the drivers side cat on fire on the test drive, I returned with one cat...

Re: Volvo XC90 - Why you love yours!

I've had plenty of used Volvos that I picked up as projects and fixed for daily drivers but this 2017 XC90 T6 Inscription is our first new one. It's a fantastic car. It was ordered as a demo car but sat on the lot with 61 miles on it and we bought it in January of 2018. It has every option (Winter P...

Re: Trouble starting & reduced engine performance

I had an S80 with the same engine / transmission and had the same camshaft / crankshaft error codes when I was doing a top end rebuild and putting everything back together. Did you have that work done at a shop or did you do it yourself? I believe our engines only had variable valve timing via an oi...

Re: Oly 850 returns, now just a driver, new XC90

Thanks man! Good advice on the tires thank you. Mine has Pirelli 275/35 R22's, the 22" rims look cool but I would have preferred smaller rims and tires with more sidewall. New rubber for this thing is like $320 per wheel, ugh. There is a 40 series tire size that is more common that might be worth a ...

Re: 2001 S60 T5 - Alternator Rebuild - parts needed

New alternators are so cheap I wouldn't bother. It's unlikely any of us could assemble an old one with new bearings and brushes and drive the same result as one that comes out of a box.

Re: A couple issues with my 96 850 Turbo sedan Topic is solved

Issue #2 is because of issue #1 definitely. Get a good OEM thermostat that opens at a higher temp and flush out your cooling system, you may have more than a 50/50 mix of coolant. Covering up 1/2 the radiator may help too certainly on the freeway.

While you're there replace the seals under and on the torque converter, they fail and leak terribly. I usually flush the bejesus out of the trans when I get it in with the wheels still off the ground.

Re: XC90 with Flood Damage...Should I buy?

Oh no. Pass on this car even if it's super cheap. The electrical system, in particular the grounds will never be right and you'll have nothing but heartache. Flood. Damaged cars are difficult to diagnose because one little wet connector can ruin your day. If you have tons of free time and a very dry...

Oly 850 returns, now just a driver, new XC90

Hi gang, I'm back on MVS. Spent the last two years fighting stage IV cancer, and had to hang up my wrenches unfortunately. I broke a rib turning a wrench on an Audi and it turned out to be prostate cancer that had spread. That was two years ago but I'm still here. :) Good news is I still have my wit...
