Previously mentioned "honey-like fluid". Aren't a couple of the motor mounts liquid filled? I've seen them on some cars, don't know about the Volvo though.

The two front subframe bolts will come off when it is put back together with thread-locker. That would be a good time to look closely for the source.

The hydraulic function used fluid like oil. Is there some in the subframe bushing?

No fluid in the subframe bushings. They look much like the upper engine torque bushing by the cam sensor.

Fluid of choice. From Lee to Justin, Erik, and y'all.
Valvoline Max Life, it has MVS preferred ingredients - a right blend, can't be wrong.

Starting to put it back together.

Serviced the rubber boot, bearing, collar at steering column, and the u-joint, all move with little to no resistance.

The creak noise as you turn steering could also come from the collar/flange, a three piece plastic assembly, size as the boot. You would hear it when handled. It is placed between the boot and the floor. It comes out with a spray of soap water, and gentle counter-clockwise turn.*

These come apart, lubricate lightly, snap three pieces together. Careful pushing the clips on the flange.
Spray the rubber boot with soap water and slide the collar back into place while rotating clockwise.

After little sanding, WD40, and cleaning spline it look ready for work.

The rack is now going in this afternoon. The tie-rod end is installed with correct measure.
There is a note from JAC, do I adjust the clip?

Yes,

Use white-out to mark the top position of the boot.
Then whatever you do, make sure the boot stays in the same position.
