Cracking upper engine mount bushing, is it safe to drive?

Post by xHeart »

It is visible to my untrained eye.

Is this the replacement part MVS recommends www.ipdusa.com/products/7355/112504-upper-engine-mount?

Any suggestion for the one on firewall?

Repairs never end

Sure, it'll just vibrate a whole heck of a lot.

See the instructions for replacing the mount - basically you need to saw out the old one and then freeze and lube up the new one with dish soap to press it in.

Check your lower "front" engine mount as well - you'll need to jack up the front, remove the right tire, and peel back the fender liner. Look for the mount to the right of the crankshaft pulley to see if it is ripped or collapsed.

It does when in Drive. I can feel it on steering, and paddle.

The cold start engine is louder and heavy for a minute or so, but then it quiets down to normal and crispier sound.

Those mounts look ok to me. You haven't seen torn. Here is a pic of a front mount that is bad. As for the upper mount, they tear clear through. That one has a while to go.

That upper mount is not broken or torn in any way

A broken upper mount doesn't change much as far as vibrations transmitting to the cabin. The main difference when that mount breaks is it causes the engine to lurch back and forth on turns, makes the car feel like it is handling poorly.

And +1, those mounts look to all be in pretty good shape, for sure the upper one.

You have 3 options:

1. Volvo Mount (maybe made by Corteco or Lemforder, not sure).

2. Febi (I don't know much about reliability of Febi but Febi has a good name).

3. Polyurethane bushing.
I use the Poly bushing from IPD at 50K in 2003.
Nine years later still good.
There is however a very very very slightly more vibration at idle.
When driving, it is fine.
It does not bother me but may bother some people.
If so, then use Volvo mount.

cn90 maybe you saw the title but didn't actually read the thread?

That upper mount is totally fine, I wouldn't replace it.

Actually, the pic posted by xHeart showed some cracks already.
This happened to me in 2003, when I took the factory upper mount out, it broke a part.
Although xHeart mount does not look too bad yet, it can cause vibration.
