Volvo Repair Database Loose vinyl on door panels

Post by grumpy1937 »

The vinyl covering on the interior door panels on my 2000 S70 is beginning to pucker and pull loose. Any quick fix suggestions as to how to solve the problem? I think there's a TSB, which came out in 2004, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks, Joe

Hey Joe,
We're all struggling with that issue ('98-'00's) as apparently Volvo used some sort of environmental friendly glue on those panels. Even if you can pull them off, you're going to find a deteriorated foam piece underneath. It seems the best bet it to take your panels off and to an upholstery shop and let them recover the panels with something that will fit your color schemed. I actually had an upholstery shop locally to me do this on a panel I picked up at a junk yard, last years, hoping that I could offer this service to others who have this problem, but I was not really pleased with their work.

Get a diabetic hypo and needle and inject a little glue under each bubble?

People have tried that...just makes that part hard and non-conforming with the other piece of the insert. No real solution but to take them off and recover them...I think a stitch in it from the rear to the front (like the R's) would be a nice final touch!

Thanks all for your suggestions. I think I'll remove the panels, try heating the vinyl with a hair dryer so I can stretch it to it's max, then try using some 3M spray adhesive to secure them. I'll let you know how it works out. Joe

I tried this method last week on the family V 70XC. I took the panels off the rear door. I drilled holes from the rear of the panel where the bubbles were. Then I used a blow drier on the vinyl and heated them up. I then used 3M spray adhesive designed for vinyl, and sprayed that in the holes I drilled. I then laid the panels flat on the ground, and used ziploc bags full of kiddy litter to weight the vinyl down. I let them sit for a day.
Unfortunately this didn't work. The vinyl is now very hard, and the bubbles are still there. I think they look even worse now than they did before...
Has anyone attempted to sew the vinyl down? I've never tried to sew before. I looked at my mom's sewing machine, and I don't think there is enough clearance to get the needle over the panel... Any ideas?

There was a thread around here (or on one of the other forums, can't remember) where someone actually had them sown on professionally. After it was done, they essentially looked like the awesome R door panels! When money permits, I'm going that route! :)

I was reading this forum and looking at pictures of V70r door panels.

I have never had the door panels off my car but can someone who has tell me if the material they are made of is to hard to stick a big need through somehow?

What if people who are having this issue leave the vinyl on their door panels and just sew two straight lines horizontally across the door panel similar to the lines on the V70R? This would definately hold the vinyl in place but it would depend if the material is thin enough to push through with a needle.

If the material of the door panel isnt... what about drilling a series of several very small holes across the panel in the same pattern of the V70R and then using a very thick (maybe waxed) thread to hold the vinyl to the doors?

Looking forward to hearing your opinions.

I have the puckering on every door on my 99 S70. It goes from the tangent all the way to the controls, not just a bubble. Whole thing is peeled up.

Instead of replacing the vinyl or door, I thought I could take a piece of thin plywood, cut it to tightly fit inside of the door plate, idea being it would be an extra plate that would cover the whole insde of the puckering thing. Fasten 2 bolts through it to its backside that will attach through the panel to the inside of the door. Mount new vinyl material over that wood to make it pretty, staple it to the backside. Then use a blowdryer to soften the door vinyl since it's pretty tight, and fasten the new plate to the whole door panel to clamp the whole thing down.

Just a theory since all I've heard is trying to fix the vinyl. If I actually get to it, I'll let you know how it works, and maybe make a fortune selling the new door plates.

Love the site, been living here since I bought my S70 a couple weeks ago and I've got lots to fix including the squeaky dash fix.

Has anyone who posted to this thread with possible solutions acheived success? I am looking into fixing this same issue with my own V70XC.
