Steering Wheel collar bushing part number needed

Hello to everybody. I have a 1998 V70. Does anyone know the part number for the round white plastic collar bushing that goes in the steering column firewall boot. Mine broke in half and the schematic that the dealer faxed me does not show it. Thanks for the time.

I was at a Volvo dealer parts counter the other day and asked about this. The guy had never heard of it. He pulled up a diagram for the steering box/column. I said "What's that part there, number 12?" He looks it up and says "It's a collar". Bingo! The part number is [edit] I had the wrong part. Really sorry. [edit] Should I order the boot also, or is it not necessary?

I saw a tutorial where the guy cleaned it, but someone else here (JRL I think) said "For god's sake just replace the bushing".

It's only a $15 part so I ordered it. I'll try not to go all Hulk on the boot.

Well if you end up needing the boot that part number looks like 9461285...

With the cold weather lately, my steering wheel has been creaking badly this week. So I just cleaned and regreased the bushing. The part number I referred to earlier in this thread (last year) is not the correct part. The Volvo dealer parts counter I ordered from didn't know about this problem apparently. I had ordered a much larger bushing. It must be for the whole steering column or something.

Sorry about that. Anyway, this is one of the easiest jobs you can do on a Volvo. I see no reason to replace the part unless it's broken or badly worn. I carefully used my fingers and a large flathead screwdriver and it came right out. Wiped it off with a rag and some paper towels. The hardest part is wedging your finger under the rubber boot to clean the steering shaft and boot. Don't sprain your finger! I used a rag soaked in Chemtool B12 to wipe it off, and a clean rag to dry it. Then I sprayed under the boot with a can of compressed air to remove any remaining dust or lint from the rag. After that, just put some Volvo PTFE Silicone grease on the bushing, pop it back in, and don't push it on too far. No more creaking!

Bushing and rubber boot come as one piece now and for a few bucks replace both, even if you can find them separately.
First it's a hell of a lot easier to just replace the entire collar boot and both these pieces are OLD and rotten by now

Mine didn't look bad at all really, but I'm sure you can clean the steering shaft off a little better with the boot removed. Next time maybe I'll replace it.

Greasing helps for a while but they noise usually comes back
