1992 740 turbo////egr problem

Post by laroux76 »

The last couple of days my volvo has been idling terribly. When I'm stopped the RPM's will fluctuate from about 1500 to 300. It feels like it is going to die every time. I took it in to a mechanic and they said it was the Air Mass sensor. Didn't fix it. Took it back and they said it was the ECT sensor. Didn't fix it. Took it back again and they said it was something to do with an ignition sensor (mounted above the battery, can't remember what its called). It is still having the same problem as before. I think it might be the EGR valve but not entirely sure. Ideas? Thanks

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Your car is fitted with an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit in the engine compartment. Have you checked for any fault codes? This is a first step in diagnosing problems.

Instructions for the use of the OBD, if you haven't used it before, are in the announcements at the top of this forum.

The mechanics I took the car to checked codes. The Air Mass sensor was the only code. I had a chevy blazer that had a bad egr a few years ago and the symptoms my volvo is showing seem to be the same.

It could well be the EGR but a common fault on the B230 engines is a dirty throttle body. It can give the symptoms you are experiencing.

The Swedishbricks FAQ has a very good writeup on the problems and the solution.
