Volvo Repair Database Dash Speaker Replacement

Post by osmium »

While changing the trip computer today, I ruined one of the dash speakers. I accidentally touched it and it disintegrated.

Is there any issue if I replace them with 4ohm speakers?

And thanks to DW Volvo for giving me my radio code. Unbelievably nice and helpful people.

No.

I have used Infinity 3.5 inch speakers - I think they are model number 3.5 cs. They don't bolt in as original but they work fine. The magnets fell off of my oem speakers in most cases.

Here is how I bolted mine back in and I unsoldered the factory harness from the OEM speakers and then soldered it back to the replacement speakers:

I left it with one bolt and all is good for me and mine. I did the same thing in my son's 850 and he cranks it to "11" - especially when he had a broken exhaust manifold.

what I did was call volvo and saab dismantlers and had them send me some original equipment, i think they were 5 or 10 bucks. yeah, they're the same junky speakers, but easy to deal with. I hate the thought of fitting aftermarket stereo stuff (spent too much time hacking dashboards and doors in my youth :) )
looks like those infinities fit well though.

Speakers arrived safe and sound.

They came with a pair of 100 uF capacitors. Did you use these?

Yes, the new speakers are coaxial and the capacitors provide a filter for the tweeters.

I followed Lee's advice and bought the Infinity speakers some months ago. They fit easily and sound good.

Substituting speakers is no problem, just make sure the impedance is correct, and polarity is observed, never replace a speaker that is rated lower than the original, this can damage the Amplifier IC.eg; if 4 ohm speakers are fitted,2 ohm speakers will be bad,if 8 ohm speakers are used they will not cause damage but will lose performance. If you can, check the resistance of a known good speaker, and try to match this.test with a multimeter and you will see the rating allthough there may be a slight variation depending on the resistance in the leads. To check the polarity of a speaker that is not clearly marked, connect a 1.5 volt battery across the speaker terminals,if the cone moves 'inwards'then the polarity is right,if it moves outwads then you have connected the battery the wrong way round.

A little note for the 99 v70,Crutchfield and other companies says they have no listing of any speakers that will fit front door. The infinity 6.5 shallow mount will fit using the factory speaker bracket just fine. You have to seperate the mounting ring from the stand off bracket, and then all if fine.
