Getting ready to change my evaporator...

Post by 850FLA »

I have a 98 V70. The evaporator is shot. I have ordered the evaporator, drier/receiver and all of the o rings for the conncections. Also the 2 seals that FCP show on their site and the 2 seals eeuroparts have on their site.

Do I need anything else for this job???

A strong will and a case of beer

I take it you've seen the evaporator tutorial?

Yep...and I have set aside 2 days. It's never as bad as they say, right? LOL

Do you see any parts missing from my list?

Unrelated...I am planning a drain and fill for my tranny. I will check my OM but do you know which fluid the 98 v70 uses?

I think you should be good. Remember that you'll have to have a vacuum pulled on the system before it can be charged again.

It uses plain old Dex-III fluid that can be found just about anywhere.

Covered....what exactly does PAG stand for. I know it's compressor oil ;) I assume it's best to buy some from Volvo?

I have no idea what the acronym stands for. But no, you don't need to buy it from Volvo - most auto parts stores carry it and put it alongside the R-134.

Last question...honest.

Anything I should be aware of on the passenger side airbag [aside from discharging the system and un plugging it?].

Just don't drop the dash cover, it might trigger it.

I was a bit scared the first time I took it off, but just remember that weird-shaped nut that has the wire attached to it. Tighten that back down good and the 3 others when you're reinstalling it, and you should be OK.

I think the drivers side one would scare me more. Make sure you read the part about the clock-spring and resetting it.

I'll be outside working on something on mine too, so if you need anything else feel free to shoot me an email at [email protected]. It's much easier for me to respond to from my phone that way.

I'm hoping my evaportator will get through this summer before I have to change it. So far, so good...it's held a charge for about a month now, and was still cold yesterday when I used it again. *fingers crossed* I really don't want to do that repair...so best of luck!

When I did mine I ordered the "A/C Evaporator Update Kit" from DW volvo ($300) which came with all the o-rings. http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDeta ... id=9171791
A few thing you might want to consider in addition to evaporator:
1. replace the Oriface Tube (expansion valve) as well, if the line is in good condition; http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDeta ... id=3545086
2. Prepare to repair your dash mount, https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=15115
If yours are not totally broken off, you can try to use fiberglass cloth to clue back on.
