The oil you see is actually grease that has come out of your CV joint due to a broken boot. If not repaired the CV joint will fail and the above repair will be required.

RCUNDY1 thanks much for the reply,

Once again, 2001 model shall not let me down; the vehicle has been shaking quite a bit while accelerating (especially uphill and I do have a circular spray around the inside of the wheel well) my next project will be to replace driver's side axle assembly...once the part comes in and I find the courage to start taking my car apart pictures shall follow (as usual). Any suggestions, additional parts needed and most important is an alignment necessary?

BTW, the driveshaft assembly from FCPGROTON any good.

Thanks much...

I think I have this problem but I am not sure. I am hearing a loud crunching sound from the front passenger wheel whenever I go over a bump of any size. If I put my foot on the top of the tire while the car is sitting on the ground and push will I feel some play in the wheel like I imagine a wheel with bad bearings would feel.

Even if I don't have this issue, I wanted to commend you for the great pics and explanation. It is great to see that people still care about sharing information and trying to help each other.

jmoss,
It could be that your "wheel bearing" (referred to as a wheel hub assembly) could be bad. After I purchased my 850 a couple years ago, I was experiencing what you describe. Below is a picture of my car's wheel hub assembly after removing the spindle to inspect it. It was completley destroyed! The bearing race had disinegrated and all the ball bearing were loose in the hub. I replaced both hub assemblies and purchased them from FCP Groton for seems like around $100 each.

Good luck in diagnosing the problem!

There is no thing as a front driveshaft.
If you mean a drive AXLE, (right and left front) a couple of hundred bucks and an hour+ or so of labor
If it's the PROPSHAFT (or driveshaft to some of us but not FRONT), then yes, they are $1000
Rebuilt from Colorado Driveshaft $450 or so

Anyone know if this would be close or related to the XC90 instructions?

03 XC90 T6 leaking transmission fluid from the axle, and looks like I need to do a replacement.

More different than similar. You have a A341E (30-40LE) transmission, which was used in XC90 and RWD Volvos.

Concepts similar; specifics different. Post in the XC90 forum and you may see a more detailed response.

One thing that really helped me out is that I removed the bolts attaching the upper control arm to the strut assembly. This allowed a lot more movement and gave me tons of room to get the axle in and out. I was able to remove and replace both axles in about two hours using basic tools.

Thanks for the great pics, and the original post is excellent! I would have really struggled without it.

Hello Matt, I need to purchase both sides axles, so I would like to know if DSS brand is a good option?, the OEM axles are very expensive and I don´t want to waste money on OEM if DSS are working well as OEM.

I will appreciate your reply. Rgds.

Excellent Pics

Used them to replace the reluctor ring on the CV end of the shaft, Didnt need to to take the shaft fully out and fitted the ring whilst the shaft was still on car. Had to use the jack under the ball joint to get the correct angle, a bit of wiggling and out the shaft popped.

Thanks
